Great day of action at GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships

Masters shine in Athlone

Ireland's veteran athletes were in fine form at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone IT yesterday.

Ranging in ages from over 35 right up to over 90, competition was high for national medals.

Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) was one of the star performers at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone winning the men's O35 shot put with a best of 16.90m. Hugh Gallagher (Milford) won the O90 shot put with a best of 5.35m.

Kelly Neely (City of Lisburn) was in fine form in the women's O35 1500m running a fast 4:20.78. Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers) impressed in the O40 women's 800m in 2:16.95.

Denise Toner (Clones) was the fastest overall in the 3,000m in 10:27.78 (O35) with Tullamore Harrier, and national marathon champion, Pauline Curley second, and first O45, in 10:31.66. Sinead McConnell (Finn Valley) won the W45 3,000m race walk in a record of 15:44.11.

Stuart Moloney (Mooreabbey Milers) was the fastest of the men's 3,000m runners with 8:45.77.

Kieran McGrath (Drogheda & District A.C.) edged an exciting M35 800m over Ronan Kearns (Rathfarnham W.S.A.F. A.C.) in 2:03.24 to 2:03.28.

In the high jump Siobheal Murray (Ratoath) W45 cleared the highes of the women with 1.45m while Geraldine Finnegan W50 (North East Runners Dundalk) cleared 1.42m and Mary Barrett (Loughrea) W55 won with 1.33m.

On the men's side Evergreen Patrick Naughton (Nenagh Olympic) won the M80 high jump with 1.00m. Aidan Gillespie (Rosses) impressed in the M40 with 1.73m. 

Jonathan Carleton M35 (Ballymena & Antrim) was the fastest of the 60m runners with 7.04 while Catherine Moynihan O'Sullivan W35 (Gneeveguilla) was the fastest of the women with 8.57.
