Athletics Ireland has today published its Club Development Strategic Plan 2024–2028, outlining a transformative roadmap for strengthening the foundation of athletics nationwide. The strategy is designed to provide sustainable support and practical guidance for clubs across the country, enabling them to grow, innovate, and thrive within their communities.
The Club Development Plan is aligned with Athletics Ireland’s overarching strategic goals and reflects national priorities in sport development. It identifies six key pillars for success: Club Governance, Volunteer Development, Funding Support, Club–School Links, Facilities, and Inclusion, Diversity & Equality.
Headline targets include:
- Engaging more clubs in 3-year development plans
- Increasing national membership to over 84,000
- Creating new clubs and increasing sports capital funding to €8 million
Dermot Mc Granaghan, Club Development Manager for Athletics Ireland, emphasised the importance of the plan, stating: “The launch of the Club Development Strategy marks a vital step in strengthening the foundation of athletics in Ireland. This document sets out a clear roadmap for supporting clubs nationwide, offering the tools, resources, and guidance needed to grow sustainably and inclusively. By focusing on governance, volunteer support, and long-term planning, the strategy aims to empower clubs to thrive and serve as vibrant hubs for athletic excellence in their communities.”
