Athletics Ireland President Bríd Golden Honors Club’s Rich Legacy

Athletics Ireland President Bríd Golden helped mark a major milestone in Irish athletics this weekend as Ballinamore Athletic Club celebrated its 60th anniversary. In a heartfelt address, President Golden praised the club’s enduring legacy, its champions, and its deep community roots.

“Ballinamore AC is more than just a club; it’s a family, a cornerstone of this community,” said President Golden, who took office just one week prior. “Looking around today and hearing the stories, it’s clear this is a place where passion and dedication have shaped generations of athletes.”

A Personal Connection

President Golden highlighted her own ties to Ballinamore, recalling the influence of Padraig Griffin, former President of BLE (1991-1994). “Padraig was more than a leader to me as a young athlete—he was a mentor whose guidance I’ll always be grateful for,” she said.

She also commended current club chairperson Gregory Smyth, a former member of her own club, Ferrybank AC. “Greg worked alongside my husband Alan in introducing Munster’s first electronic timing system—seeing him now leading Ballinamore with such enthusiasm fills me with pride!”

Honouring a Hammer-Throwing Legend

A special moment came with the unveiling of a plaque at AIB Bank commemorating Bill Britton, a Munster hammer-throwing champion who worked in Ballinamore in the 1920s.

“Bill Britton was part of a golden era for Irish hammer throwing,” said President Golden. “His success helped pave the way for Dr. Pat O’Callaghan, Ireland’s first Olympic gold medalist. It’s only fitting that we remember his contribution here in Ballinamore.”

A Club of Champions

Ballinamore AC’s history includes Olympians like Eddie Leahy and Colin Griffin, as well as the legendary coach Joe Doonan, who guided stars such as Catriona McKiernan.

President Golden paid special tribute to the Griffin family, saying, “Padraig, Patricia, and their family have given so much—not just to this club, but to Irish athletics as a whole. Their legacy is an inspiration.”

The Next 60 Years

Reflecting on the club’s future, President Golden expressed confidence in its continued success.

“Sixty years represents countless hours of hard work, friendship, and dreams achieved,” she said. “But what excites me most is the future. Ballinamore AC will keep inspiring the next generation of Irish athletes.”

Congratulations to Ballinamore AC on this incredible milestone!
