Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) has broken the long-standing Irish senior record in the Women’s Discus Throw.
The Westmeath native threw a best of 58.40 metres at the OK Throws Series meeting in the USA yesterday to break Patricia Walsh’s national record (57.60m) that had stood for 41 years.
Fogarty’s record-breaking throw came in the second round of the competition, which was won by Nigeria’s Obiageri Amaechi who threw 62.83m.
The 25-year-old has been in excellent form this season, representing Ireland at the European Throwing Cup in Cyprus last month, and will be looking to continue on her upward trajectory going forward.
