Woodie’s DIY Inter Club Cross Country From left to right: Brendan Hackett, CEO, Athletics Ireland, Vinny Mulvey, Raheny Shamrock A.C. , Fionnuala Britton, Sli Cualann and Ray Colman, Chief Executive Woodie’s DIY Athletics Irelands Premier Cross Country event kicks off next Saturday 10th March with the Junior Women at 1pm, Junior Men 1.30, Senior Women 2.15 and Senior Men at 2.45 in Sligo Racecourse. We can look forward to some exciting contests with the winners of the All Ireland Schools John Coghlan and Suzanne Huet hoping to complete the double in the Junior races. Dundrum South Dublin with Suzanne and the French O’Carroll twins Rebecca and Charlotte look likely winners of the Junior Women title again. European Cross Country Silver medallist and Inter County Champion Fionnuala Britton Sli Cualainn A.C. will go head to head with local girl Mary Cullen just back from her 7th place finish in the 3000m at the European Indoor Championships and 14th in the European Cross Country. Also in contention for medal places are Jill Shannon 2006 National Marathon winner from North Belfast Harriers, Pauline Curley Tullamore Harriers ,Niamh O’Sullivan Riocht A.C. and title holder Maria Mc Cambridge. Last years winners Dundrum South Dublin will have to fight hard against a strong team from North Belfast Harriers to hold on to the title. In the Senior Men’s 12k race, defending champion Vinny Mulvey (Raheny Shamrock A.C.) will face stiff opposition from the in form Joe Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.), Seamus Power (Kilmurray/Ibrickane A.C.), Mark Kenneally (Clonliffe Harriers A.C.) and the local favourite David Kelly (Sligo A.C). Raheny Shamrock A.C will be looking to wrest the inter-club team title from their biggest rival and defending champion’s Clonliffe Harriers A.C. Both Peter Matthews and Robert Connolly are included on the Dundrum South Dublin A.C. team so it should be a great race with every place counting.
