Multi-event athletes looking to top the class

The Irish Life Health Irish Schools’ Combined Events Championships takes place in Athlone It this Saturday (November 9) with good competition in store.

The athletes competing will have been inspired by Kate O’Connor’s silver medal winning performance at the European U20 Championships in the heptathlon in the summer. O’Connor competed in this event when she was in school in St Vincent’s Dundalk.

Okwu Backari (Ashton College) was third last year in the minor girls’ and will be aiming to finish higher up the podium this year.

Laura Frawley (St Marys SS Charleville) won the junior girls’ last year and goes in a competitive intermediate age group that includes Yemi Talabi (King’s Hospital) and Kate Hosey (St Attracta’s Tubbercurry).

Louise King (Claremorris) is among the competitors in the senior girls’ event.

Finn O'Neill (Limavady GS) will be looking to defend his minor boys’ title whileBobby Amadi (Templeogue College) who medalled as a minor last year will be among those looking for a good performance in the junior boys’ section.

There is a good intermediate boys’ field while Nelvin Appiah (Ballinode College) is one of the favourites in the senior boys’ competition.
