NATIONAL 5K ACTION SET TO SIZZLE IN PHOENIX PARK

POSTED:

The Irish Runner 5K sponsored by Sports Travel International kicks off the 2022 edition of the Athletics Ireland Race Series this weekend (Sunday May 15th). The race also incorporates the National 5K championships and it looks sure to be a thrilling dash for individual and team medals with a host of familiar faces returning to action.

The race for individual medals is sure to hotly contested with competitors such as Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock), Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers), Ciara Wilson (D.M.P. A.C), and many more all taking to the Phoenix Park start line.

Kelly is back to defend his 2019 Championship title, coming here having looked in great form at the recent National Road Relay Championships in Raheny. The Raheny star is sure to be on the shoulder of the always thrilling Efrem Gidey from the start.

Gidey played a leading role as part of the Clonliffe Harriers team that secured the National Road Relay title in Raheny last month. In 2019 the Clonliffe Harriers athlete represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, claiming a brilliant U20 bronze medal.

There will be a strong contest for the women’s title with Ciara Wilson among the favourites following her second-place finish at the National 10K Championships last month at this very venue. The 2020 National Indoor 3,000m champion will be a tough nut to crack and anyone finishing ahead of the DMP AC athlete will be right in the hunt for gold.

The race is set for off at an earlier time of 9:30am in the Phoenix Park with athletes and spectators encouraged by the event organisers to arrive early. All National Championship athlete are asked to make their way to the first wave.
