Sun shines as students sparkle at GloHealth Leinster Schools

Glorious sunshine greeted day two of the GloHealth Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Morton Stadium today (May 14th) which witnessed some top class performances. Provisional results of the day are HERE

The intermediate girls’ 3,000m didn’t disappoint with Amy Rose Farrell (Mount Anville), Abbie Taylor (St Gerard’s) and Jodie McCann (Institute of Education) all going under the previous record of 10:15.26 set by Tara Jameson in 2008.

McCann led the early laps with the trio pulling away from the rest of the field before Farrell showed her class in the last two laps to win in 9:55.60. Taylor strode to second place in 10:04.91 with McCann third in 10:14.99 in a high quality race.

Sophie Murphy (Mount Anville) impressed in the senior girls’ 3,000m with a front-running 10:04.53. Lara O’Byrne (St Joseph’s Lucan) posted a new record in the inter girls' pole vault with 2.80m with Lauren O’Keeffe (Loreto  Balbriggan) setting a new intermediate girls' hammer record of 56.24m.

Ryan Carthy Walsh (Good Counsel) set a new intermediate boy's high jump record of 2.05m which was also a European Youths qualifying height. Darragh Gaffney (St Finian's) also set a European Youth mark winning the discus with 534.48m - he also won the shot put with 15.55m.

The European Youth marks continued in the senior girls' discus wwhere Niamh Fogarty (St Joseph's Rochfortbridge) won with 43.40m. She also won the shot with 12.69m. Sarah Derham (Dominican Griffith Avenue) set a new senior pole vault record of 3.05m.

Sean Lawlor (Kylemore) completed the senior boys' sprint double winning the 100m in 10.83 and the 200m in 21.86. Kevin McGrath (St Pat’s, Navan) and Jack O’Leary (Clongowes) impressed in the 1500m and 5,000m. McGrath won the 1500m in 3:58.76 and O'Leary won the 5,000m in 15:28.55. Ashbourne's Keith Marks and Shane Joyce both completed achieved victory on the double. Marks won the senior boys' long jump with 7.36m and the high jump with 1.90m. Joyce won the senior boys' triple jump with 14.29m and the javelin with 54.80m.
