Track and Field League Final This Sunday in Tullamore

The 2005 Women's and Men's Track and Field League Final will be held next Sunday August 21st at Tullamore starting @11.30 a.m. The title of National Club Champions is a much sought after accolade as it brings with it the possibility of competing in the European Champion Clubs Competition next year. DSD head the women's points table and they will have to surmount the challenge of Abbey A.C., Saint Laurence O’Toole, Leevale and Lagan Valley if they are to regain a title they won in the past. They can call on Aoife Byrne and Maria McCambridge for the middle distance events and Claire Bergin for the sprints. Abbey A.C. have made the transition from the first division with some style and Elaine McCaffrey and Michelle Rodgers are potential points scorers for them. Leevale will probably have to start without their World Student Games Medallists Derval O’Rourke and Ailish McSweeney but have some talented young athletes who could score well. North Down head the men's premier division table. Quite an achievement for the Bangor based club who last year were Division 1 Champions. Crusaders won the title two years ago and if they can field a full team they could repeat that success. DSD have a good selection of athletes across a wide range of events and Clonliffe have young sprinters like John Laffey and Daniel Kavanagh to complement a strong distance running squad.. Only three points separated County Tipperary, Shercock and Abbey after the preliminary rounds in the Men's Division 1 and this should be an interesting competition. The women's first division was equally close with Bandon just three points ahead of Clonliffe with Co. Meath a further two points behind. Altogether an interesting days competition ahead in Tullamore on Sunday.
