Eileen O’Keefe returned to Morton Stadium and continued where she left off the previous week by adding to her one week old mark of 68.14 with a new National Record of 69.36. She followed a first round foul with 67.53 and 67.35. The Hungarian visitor who has plus 70 metres mark to her credit was enjoying the best of days as she could only manage 63.39. Eileen was clearly right on form as she got her 5th round effort out to 69.36 a great boost to her confidence as she heads off for the world championships in Helsinki. Leevale’s sprinters were in fine form as Ailish McSweeney was never headed after she came out of the blocks to win the 100 metres in 11.48 with National 200m Champion Emily Maher just behind in 11.56 with Joice Maduaka third in 11.57. Shortly afterwards it was her clubmate Jer O’Donoghue’s turn and he reversed last week National placing by beating Gary Ryan in 10.42 with Gary on 10.45 and Germany’s Till Helmke third on 10.46. Till Helmke came back later to win the 200 looking very strong down the straight to win in 20.54 from Tim Abeyie’s 20.86 with Paul Hession making a return after injury in third spot on 20.89. After the race Paul expressed himself happy with his run and now is looking forward to Helsinki. Tomas Coman won the 400 in a comfortable 46.53 ahead of David McCarthy and Rob Daly. Ulrike Urbansky of Germany won the womens 400 in 53.12 with Michelle breaking new ground with her third spot in 53.82. Elaine McCaffrey and Claire Bergin both ran faster than ever before. The 800 was won by James Nasrat of Wales in 1.49.25 ahead of fellow Welsh man James Watkins. Sinead Delahunty used all her experience to win the womens 1500 in 4.13.27 with Kelly Reid second in 4.15.00 and Jolene Byrne third in 4.16.10. There were a number of new personal bests for some of the Juniors in the field. Roseanne Galligan, Deirdre Azmere Gebrezgi and Linda Byrne all went home happy with their new p.b.’s. Eoin Leen won the Discus with a new best of 51.89 ahead of John Menton’s 51.35. Ciaran McDonagh had a fine series of jumps his winning effort of 7.77 coming in the 5th round. Derval O’Rourke continued her fine season with a fast 12.97 unfortunately the wind reading was + 2.5. England’s Andrew Turner won the 110 Hurdles in 13.63 a Commonwealth games qualifier with Peter Coghlan recording a seasonal best in 13.68 and Peter Monaghan anew personal best in third spot. The Morton Mile boasted no fewer than 10 sub four men but Jousef Abdi of Australia proved he had the best kick to win the home straight battle in 4.01.13 ahead of Luke Watson of USA and James Nolan in third. Mullingars mark Christie had a good run in fourth with European Junior 1500 Champion Colin Costolloe in 6th setting a new National Junior Record of 4.01.83. The meeting provided home based athletes with a good opportunity to compete against suitable opposition which was evidenced by the number of p.b.’s recorded. Eileen O’Keefe and Till Helmke received splendid Waterford Crystal Trophies as Athletes of the Meeting.
