This weekend July 9th & 10th, sees the country’s leading young athletes in action in Tullamore when the Lucozade Sport sponsored championships for athletes in the age categories 14 to 19 take place. In excess of 500 of the country’s best young athletes will be in action over the two days as they seek the much coveted championship medals. Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper is one of a group of highly talented young athletes benefiting from the coaching of Brid Hallissey and she will be displaying her talents in a number of events; 100m Hurdles, Long Jump and Javelin. Katie Lydon and Gemma Hynes are among a group of emerging sprinters west of the Shannon and the Galway City athletes should be among those involved in the finish of the 100 and 200 metres. Daniel Treacy from Moynalvey A.C. should be competitive over 800 and 1500 metres as should Conor Healy of Clonliffe Harriers who ran 1:57.91 for 800 last week. Daire Bermingham is one of a talented group of middle and distance runners in Raheny Shamrocks who have Dick Hooper as their guide and mentor and he will be among the favourites for the under 19 1500m. Newbridge’s Laura Cogan was part of the women's team at the recent European Cup in Portugal and she should win the shot. Inevitably there will be many other emerging talented athletes over the week end with competition getting underway each day at 9.30 a.m.
