Roisin McGettigan and David Gillick were the sole Irish winners on a tough weekend for the Irish teams at the European Cup in Leiria Portugal. Both squads were unable to avoid relegation to the second league for 2006, the women just missing out by 4 points while the men were 12 points off the pace for survival. Gillick was the class of the field in the 400m where his 45.96 was over half a second quicker than the second placer. McGettigan battled in the heat and came home first in the 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 9:47.0, her second fastest of all time and just outside the National Record she set in 2004. Derval O'Rourke ran the second fastest 100m hurdles of her life, finishing 2nd to Britain's Sarah Claxton with a 13.12 clocking which leaves her on the verge of a World Championship B standard time (13.11). Eileen O'Keeffe was a little off her best in the hammer but such is her ability she still managed to grab second place. Michelle Carey continued her recent excellent form, also taking 2nd in the 400m hurdles behind Britain's Liz Fairs. James Nolan's speed was on display in a tight finish of the 3000m where he was 2nd to Portugal's Rui Silva but impressively left Gert-Jan Liefers among others in his trail. Antoine Burke moved to 4th on the alltime Irish 400m hurdles list with a run of 51.23 for 4th and looks likely to improve significantly on that time over the next few weeks. The women's 4x100m relay team of Derval O'Rourke, Anna Boyle, Ailis McSweeney and Ciara Sheehy finished 5th but had the consolation of setting a new Irish Record of 44.68.
