In absolutely splendid conditions there were some excellent performances in a wide range of event over the two days. Clonliffe’s Anthony Mc Creevy vaulted 4.40 to win the under 17 category narrowly missing at 4.56. Anthony coached by Jim Alexander has his sights set on the National Junior Record and is hopeful of vaulting 4.60 by the end of the season. Patrick Mc Cabe of Dunboyne Athletic Club won the Under 18 hammer with a sixth round effort of 59.49. Benefitting from Phil Conway’s coaching moving beyond the 60 metres mark is the next target for the Meath man. There were some very competitive 800 metres races. Michael O’Sullivan of West Muskerry had to settle for second place in Saturday’s 1500 but he went for front running tactics in Sunday’s 800 and was never headed in a gun to tape victory in the under 14 race. Raheny’s Chris Jones went for the shortest route possible in his race. With those in front of him moving out he bided his time well and moved on the inside to take victory down the finish straight. Ciara Cronin was one of Ferrybank’s many winners as she clocked 2.16.34 with a very smooth running display to win the under 15 800. Conor Murphy of Naas had an excellent two days winning the 1500 on Saturday in 4.09.47 and coming back on Sunday to win a home straight battle with Ferrybank’s Niall Tuohy just three hundredths behind Conor’s winning 1.58.74. Clonliffe’s Conor Healy sought to add the 800 title to the 400 he won in 50.34 on the first day. However he had no response off the last bend when Ballymena’s Stephen Morrow began his run for home to win in 1.56.14. The warm conditions were ideal for sprinting and Celbridge’s Claire Brady won the 200 in 25.28 with Fingallian’s Louise Kiernan clocking 12.26 for the 100. Galway City’s Katie Lydon won both the 300 mtrs in 40.26 and the 100 under 18 in 12.22. Shercock’s Peter Muldoon set a championship best performance of 21.36.03 in the 5k walk. Athletes with an athletic pedigree made their mark too. With Phillipa Conway, daughter of 1972 Olympian Phillip, winning the discus with 33.38 whilst Catherine McManus, daughter of former internationals Mary McKenna and Brian, won the 75m Hurdles for under 14’s.
