Sprint Relay Workshop

35 coaches from Leinster and beyond travelled to Tallaght AC on Sunday November 1st for a two hour Sprint Relay Workshop. Delivered by AAI RDO and National Junior Men’s Relay Coach Daniel Kilgallon, This workshop looked closely at the basics of coaching sprint relays . In the first hour of the workshop the fundamentals of sprint relay were examined and presented under the following headings:

•             Why Coach Relays

•             Building a Club Relay Culture

•             Selecting the Team

•             Running Positions

•             The Zones

•             Baton Exchange Technique

•             Check Marks & Starting Position

•             Promote Relays

Following the presentation coaches made their way to the track where the theory was now put into practice. Here coaches were offered ideas on warm up routines and drills for relay squads followed by practical demonstrations as athletes Joseph Ojewumi and Simon Essuman determined checkmarks, lane positioning and showcased correct baton exchange technique in each of the zones.

Plans are in place to bring this workshop to other regions over the coming months.
