GloHealth National CE Champs and League Round One

POSTED:

The GloHealth National Combined Events Championships take place on the 23rd and 24th in Templemore Stadium. The Irish combined events community will aim to show good form ahead of the European Cup Combined Events Championships (2nd League) which takes place in Poland from the 5th-6th of July.

Senior

An exciting battle is expected between Michael Bowler (Kilkenny City Harriers AC), Shane Aston (Trim AC) and Kourosh Foroughi (Star of the Sea AC) in the senior men’s decathlon. The decathlon comprises of 10 events (100m, long jump, shot putt, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m) over two days of gruelling competition.
At the GloHealth AAI Games last weekend Bowler and Aston contested the 110m hurdles and discus events in preparation for the national championships. Aston recorded a new personal best of 15.79 seconds for the hurdles and threw 37.40m in the discus while Bowler ran 16.04 in the hurdles and threw 27m in the discus. Defending champion Foroughi has yet to compete this outdoor season after enjoying an encouraging indoor season which included a 2.17m clearance in the high jump.

Karen Dunne (Bohermeen AC) and Roisin Howard (Bandon AC) will go head to head in the senior women’s heptathlon contest. The heptathlon event consists of seven events (100m hurdles, high jump, shot putt, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m) over the weekend of competition.

Youth Competition

Shannen Sheehy (Cushinstown AC) will start as favourite in the youth girls competition having shown encouraging early season form. Sheehy has seasons best of 14.12 for the 100m hurdles and has also cleared 1.70m indoors in the high jump. The youth boy’s competition will contest the decathlon for the first ever time and it will be more of an open event with no clear favourite emerging. There will also be GloHealth National Titles up for grabs in the junior and master categories with the action getting underway at 12pm with the 100m hurdles.
