Masters on the medal in Athlone

The Irish Life Health National Masters Indoor Championships will provide another exciting and enjoyable spectacle at the Athlone International Arena on Sunday (March 5th).

Several top masters will be going for a treble including Joe Gough in the M60 200m, 400m and 800m, John McDermott (Sligo) in the M70 60m, 200m, 400m, Shane Sheridan (DSD) M55 60m,200m, 400m, and Martin McEvilly (Galway City Harriers) M65 800m, 1500m and 3,000m.

Peadar McGing (DSD) is entered in five events in the M60 including the long jump and shot put – he will be up there competing for most medalled athlete on the day. Ger Cremin (An Riocht) should star in the M35 60m hurdles and his club mate Jer O’Donoghue is an interesting entry in the M35 60m. Brian Lynch (North East Runners Dundalk) should be another to star in the M60 section.

There is no shortage of top women’s masters either with Maxine Jones (DSD) W60, Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers) W45 defending her 3,000m crown, Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers) W40 and Denise Toner (Clones) F35 1500 and 3,000m among them.

Snezana Bechtina (Clonliffe Harriers) and Avril Dillon (DSD) should be among those to star in the F35 sprints. Bechtina will be eyeing a treble in the 60m, 200m and 400m. Ani Rebegea (MSB) competes in the F40 high jump and 400m

Inspiration for the younger generation is Sean Cowler (Donore Harriers) who still holds the outdoor 200/400 M65 records and competes in the M90 section. Matt Slattery (Clonliffe Harriers) is in search of gold in the M65 200m and 400m.
