Northern Ireland Select Team for Glasgow

Northern Irish Commonwealth Games Team Announcement

A host of Northern Ireland record holders are amongst the team of fourteen athletes named by the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, including Amy Foster (100m), Kerry O’Flaherty (Steeplechase), Zoe Brown (Pole Vault), Ben Reynolds (110mH), and Paralympic champion, Jason Smyth (100m).  

These record breakers are part of a team made up of an exciting mix of Commonwealth Games veterans and debutants.

Commonwealth Games athletics team; 

Zoe Brown (Pole Vault), Amy Foster (100m), Gladys Ganiel (Marathon), Peter Glass (Decathlon and 4 x 100m), Jason Harvey (400mH and 4 x 100m), Katie Kirk (800m), Dempsey McGuigan (Hammer), Christine McMahon (400mH), Daniel Mooney (1500m), Kerry O’Flaherty (3000m Steeplechase), Paul Pollock (10,000m), Leon Reid (200m and 4 x 100m), Ben Reynolds (110mH and 4 x 100m), Jason Smyth (100m and 4 x 100m).

Jacqueline McKernan, Athlete Development Manager, Athletics Northern Ireland, said:

“I am delighted that such a strong team of athletes has been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Each athlete selected responded to the challenge set in 2013 when the consideration standards were first announced and they continue to perform consistently as the season progresses.

“Athletics Northern Ireland have selected one of the largest ever athletics teams for the Commonwealth Games; the depth of talent and experience within the squad truly reflects how strong the sport of athletics in Northern Ireland is as a whole. Those athletes selected have shown dedication that is second to none and with the aid of their coaches they have earned their spot on the team, I would congratulate them all on their achievement.”

Athletics Northern Ireland is delighted to have worked alongside the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council to select such a strong athletics team. The athletes selected are a mixture of Commonwealth Games veterans and young talent all of whom will no doubt rise to the challenges of such a high profile event and thrive on the excitement of the Games.
