Tenth Place for Morland & Walsh

POSTED:

Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) placed tenth in the heptathlon on the penultimate day of competition at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia. Morland began the two day competition by recording a blistering 13.62 seconds in the 100m hurdles which equalled Sarah Lavin’s Irish Youth Record. Morland also secured personal bests in the javelin (43.64m) and 200m (24.84) to yield an overall point’s score of 5.569 for a tenth place finish against the World’s best youth combined event athletes.

After making the final in the shot putt Michaela Walsh also made the world final in the hammer event after throwing 61.71m in qualification. The Swinford AC athlete couldn’t quite re-produce this form in the final throwing a best of 52.73m in the second round to place tenth overall.

Unlucky for Power

The other Irish athlete in action at these championships was Nadia Power (Templeogue AC). Unfortunately Power had a heavy fall mid-race in her 1500m heat and was unable to finish. She will have gained invaluably from the experience in a season where she has made marked improvements.
