POSTED:

Athletics Ireland (AI) and Munster Technological University (MTU) would like to express their sincere gratitude to The Government; An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar; An Tánaiste, Micheál Martin; Minister Catherine Martin; and Minister Thomas Byrne. In particular, AI & MTU would like to thank local Cork Ministers, Michael McGrath, Simon Coveney & Senator Jerry Buttimer who have all been hugely supportive of this project from the beginning and for their significant efforts over the past three years to secure this funding.

In 2020, AI & MTU were jointly awarded €9.2m from the Large-Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). In 2020, the first phase of the development of the new MTU gymnasium and basketball arena commenced and these works were completed by August 2023. Currently phase two the upgrade of the MTU athletics track has commenced and will be completed in the Spring of 2024.

The announcement this week of €5.1m in supplementary funding for this project will enable AI & MTU to move forward with phase three which includes a large indoor athletics hall, classrooms and sports laboratories.
