Record Numbers for GloHealth National Master Indoor Championships

A record number of 400 athletes are competing at the GloHealth National Master Indoor Championships which take place in AIT International Arena, Athlone this Sunday, 15th of March. Exciting competition and friendly camaraderie amongst the competitors has always been then ethos of this event with athletes competing in the 35+ to 90+ categories in the battle for the GloHealth National Titles.

Middle Distance

The all-conquering Joe Gough (West Waterford AC) is entered in the 200m, 400m and 800m events for Sunday. Gough enjoyed a wonderful 2014 season which included setting a world record in the M60 800m with a time of 2.14.06 in Athlone last February. He also went on to secure gold in the 800m and bronze in the 1500m at the World Master Indoor Track and Field Championships in Budapest last March.

Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers AC) has made a habit of picking up national titles over the last decade whether it is on the road, track or cross country. Former Olympic marathon representative Curley will once again start as favourite in the women’s middle distance events.

Sprint Events

The sprint events is likely to throw up a number of intriguing battles with Kevin Cogley (Menapians AC), Jonathan Carleton (Ballymena & Antrim AC) and Peter Doherty (Ratoath AC) just a few of the names to watch out for. Multi-event athletes Mary Barrett (Loughrea AC) and Geraldine Finnegan (Dunleer AC) will have a busy day in Athlone as they contest a number of track and field events throughout the programme.

Former Irish junior 60m Hurdles record holder Trevor McGlynn (Lifford AC) is back in action in the M35 hurdles where he will face a stern test from Ger Cremin (An Riocht AC).

Hugh Gallagher (Milford AC) continues to thrive as he contests the long jump and shot putt events with Patrick Naughton (Nenagh Olympic AC) set to go in the 60m.

Field Events

Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers AC) is the standout performer in the field events and will start as the outstanding favourite in the M35 shot putt event. Breathnach won the national senior title on the 22nd of February with a winning distance of 17.42m. The distance is also the current stadium record for the arena, an improvement on this mark will be at the back of the Galway athletes mind come Sunday.

Mary Barrett and Lucy Moore (Dundrum South Dublin AC) are set to go head to head in the high jump and shot putt events.
