Fit4Life in Focus: Mary Ita O’Connor

POSTED:

Athletics challenges the human body to do incredible things with amazing people behind each event. Once such person is Mary Ita O’Connor from West Limerick AC.

At 39 O’Connor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but it was not years later when the disease began to impact on day-to-day life and her confidence. Described by those around her as “hurling mad,” sport has always played a role in O’Connor’s life and despite her diagnosis, with the support of her family and friends, O’Connor took part in the Joanne McMahon Fundraiser Run.

O’Connor then joined the West Limerick AC Fit4Life Group to continue her running journey and build her confidence further.

West Limerick AC was set up in the 1970’s and offers a range of events for its members, from competitive Track and Field to its Fit4Life Club, catering each of its events to suit everyone of all levels and abilities. The ethos of Fit4Life is centred around creating a positive environment for both new and experienced runners and walkers to develop their abilities in a non-competitive atmosphere.

With over 40 members and a coach in Mark Ryan, it was a perfect fit for O’Connor and has seen her go from taking part in a Fun Run to competing in 5KM and 10KM’s Competitions. Most recently, O’Connor won the Limerick County 4 Mile in her age category.

The social aspect of Fit4Life Club has seen O’Connor form many friendships within the club, but most notably is her friendship with Mary Healy, both can be seen training together on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

There are currently over 70 Fit4Life Clubs registered across the country, accepting new members, please see here on how to join your local club: https://www.athleticsireland.ie/clubs/fit4life/find-a-fit4life-club
